Low Interest Credit Cards
With more people using credit cards, there has been an increase in the amount of credit card variants available to consumers. One strategy has been to lure potential customers via a low rate credit card which features a low rate of interest charged on purchases rather than a rewards program.
A low interest rate is simply defined as rate which is considerably lower than the standard interest rates offered on many credit cards. This may be either a low ongoing rate for the life of the card or a low introductory interest rate which will revert back to the standard rate of interest after a set period of time, or a combination of the two.
Interest on purchases is usually charged if you don’t pay your balance off in full before the expiration of the interest free days available. When there are interest free days available on a credit card, these interest free days include the month in which the purchase is made. An example of a 55 day interest free period works like this:
- You get your credit card and activate it. This commences your statement period
- You make your first purchase on the same day
- Your statement will conclude after 30 days, totaling all of your purchases in the period
- When your statement comes, you then have up to 25 days to make the full payment on that activity before you will be charged interest. The 30 days since first purchase and the 25 days to pay makes up the 55 day interest free period
A low interest credit card might be appealing to those who don’t manage to pay off their credit card balance in full every month or who regularly make large purchases with their credit card. High interest rates can quickly increase your debt and can cripple you with large monthly payments, therefore a lower rate of interest can save a substantial amount of money in interest costs.
Before applying for a low interest rate credit card, be sure to check all the finer details and read the small print. The interest charged on a credit card is basically a fee payable to the bank for the privilege of being able to borrow their money. In this way low interest credit cards are not as profitable for banks so they may try to compensate for this by charging for other fees such as an annual fee, higher cash advance rates and late payment fees. It is important to review all features before selecting your ideal card.
If the low interest rate offered is for an introductory period only, be sure also to check the rate that the interest will revert to. This could be higher than many of the standard rates of interest currently available. Try and repay as much of your debt as you can within the lower rate period before the rate reverts to the higher standard variable rate. An introductory rate is often referred to as a honeymoon rate.
In correlation with low annual fee credit cards, a down side to low interest credit cards can be the lack of additional features such as extended purchase warranty, bonus insurances or emergency cover. It is worth considering all of the features offered by a credit card, not just looking at the interest rate are as other features can also be valuable and save you money in other ways.
